Salmond is grilled on Mumsnet web chat.(News)

THEY are the internet-savvy army of mothers who tore strips off David Cameron and made Gordon Brown crumble over his favourite biscuit.

But Alex Salmond yesterday became the latest political leader to brave a live debate with members of the influential Mumsnet website.

The First Minister fielded questions on subjects ranging from closure-threatened libraries to the Iraq War.

Nappies, horse racing tips and his favourite Englishwomen were among the lighter topics brought up.

Learning from Gordon Brown's 'biscuitgate' saga - where the former Prime Minister refused to reveal to the website what his favourite biscuit was - Mr Salmond's first step was to let people know his snack of choice is a Tunnock's chocolate caramel wafer.

Mr Salmond was then forced to apologise for accidentally hitting a Mumsnet user in the face with an umbrella.

The poster - known as 'Major-Pettigrew' - revealed the First Minister had 'whacked him in the face' with the brolly at the Turriff Agricultural Show in Aberdeenshire last year.

Asked if he had ever changed a nappy, the First Minister said: 'Yes, and very badly.' In a previous web chat, Mr Cameron was chastised for taking too long to reply to a query about nappy allowances for children with cerebral palsy.
