Fed: PM defends Kopassus link with ADF
Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD has defended plans for Australia's military to resume linkswith Indonesia's elite Kopassus special forces troops, despite the unit's notorious humanrights record.
The Australian Defence Force plans to resume contact and possibly counter-terrorismtraining with Kopassus, despite its suspected support for the militia carnage in EastTimor in 1999.
Mr HOWARD says it's in Australia's interests to resume contact with Indonesia's topmilitary force to help battle terrorism in the region.
He's told journalists Kopassus has the capacity to deal with hijacking and terroristsituations, and could one day be called on to save Australians caught in terrorist violence.
