Fed: ACCC to examine tobacco case

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will examine yesterday's landmarkjudgement against an international tobacco company.

The Victorian Supreme Court yesterday awarded Melbourne grandmother ROLAH ANN MCCABE$700,000 compensation for her lung cancer.

The court also found the tobacco company, British American Tobacco Australia Services, had destroyed thousands of internal documents so they could not be used in court.

The ACCC is already investigating whether the tobacco industry lied about its knowledgeof the negative effects of smoking.

The watchdog is in the final stages of compiling its report, after being asked to investigatethe industry by the Senate last September.

The report will consider the estimated $12.7 billion costs of tobacco diseases andinvestigate whether Australian tobacco companies and their overseas affiliates have engagedin any misleading, deceptive or unconscionable conduct in downplaying the adverse effectsof smoking.
