Qld: Blood bank runs low over easter
The Red Cross Blood Bank in Queensland says it fears patients could be placed at risk,
because blood stocks could become limited over the Easter break.
The five-day holiday, closely followed by the May Day holiday, has forced the blood
bank to open on Easter Saturday for the first time in Brisbane.
The Red Cross Blood Service says this is necessary because blood platelets have only
a five-day shelf life.
The problem is likely to be compounded by the Easter road toll, with many holiday-makers
taking to the highways over the break.
Special regional centres will be available to take blood from donors in Townsville,
Southport and Nambour on Saturday.
Metropolitan suburbs such as Alderley, Bulimba, Wolston Park and Logan Village will
be visited by a mobile blood collection van.
And permanent sites in Brisbane city, Strathpine and Mt Gravatt will also be open on Saturday.

Fed: HIC confirms plan to release Medicare data
The Federal Government has confirmed plans to make large amounts of Medicare data available
to insurance companies, law firms and state health bodies.
But the organisation that manages Medicare, the Health Insurance Commission, says private
patient information will remain confidential.
Commission spokesman BRYAN RICHARDS says it plans to allow access to information such
as the number of consultations by doctors in a set period, or data on how many specific
pathology tests have been ordered.
The Australian Doctors' Fund says the Commision's plan conradicts privacy safeguards
outlined in its annual report.
But Dr RICHARDS says the Commission simply wants to make more data publicly available,
and there are no plans to sell private patient information.

FED:Kim Carr heads to US to save car industry
The new manufacturing minister KIM CARR is heading to the US next month to help save
the car industry.
The Australian says Senator CARR will put a plan to the chief executives of General
Motors and Ford in Detroit as the government seeks to secure a new round of investment.
Earlier this week Senator CARR was demoted from the portfolio of industry, innovation,
science and research.
He says no-one had had the guts to put to his face suggestions his performance had
been the reason for his demotion, and when asked why he had been demoted, said that's
something that should be taken up with the Prime Minister.
